The Island of Misfit Toys was created by DJ Ananas in 2020 as a mental health outlet during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. With the world in isolation, many people were missing the connection, energy, and freedom that came from being out with loved ones. In that quiet stillness, what remained was time, emotion, creativity—and music.

Out of this space, curated sets began to take form. Inspired by film, television, and deeply personal moments, these sonic journeys became a way to reconnect with feeling, community, and self-expression.

The name The Island of Misfit Toys is a nod to the film, "The Perks of Being a Wallflower", where a character finds belonging in a group that welcomes him just as he is. That same spirit of radical inclusion is at the heart of this project. It’s a space for the overlooked, the genreless, the emotional, the experimental—for anyone seeking resonance through sound.

Blending electronic, R&B, Afrobeats, hip hop, and more, The Island of Misfit Toys is about erasing boundaries and letting emotion guide the mix. It’s not just about music—it’s about creating a world where every misfit has a home.

What began as a personal and digital experiment has now grown into a monthly inclusive in-person curated event, rotating between multiple local businesses.
